History of Tarot
THE HISTORY OF TAROT Tarot decks have been in existence since the 1400’s and although they come in many different designs, the concept is the same. There is an acknowledgment that the games’ origins are from Northern Italy, and the name comes from Tarocchi from the Taro River region. The decks of this period included philosophical, social, poetical, astronomical, and heraldic images from Roman, Greek and Babylonian heroes. The Tarocchi was a card game in which each card held a meaning for the person who chose the card. The card would then be interpreted by someone for that person. They were not considered “occult” items until the late 1800 when the Tarot decks we see today come into existence. There is a school of thought that mysticism and magic came into the game when they were adopted by mystics, occultists and secret societies in the 18th and 19th centuries. Occult decks Tarot decks today consist of 78 cards which are split into two decks that can be read together or separately; Major and Minor Arcarna. “The Rider-Waite” tarot deck is one of the most popular Tarot decks in use today in the English-speaking world. The cards were drawn by illustrator Pamela Colman Smith from the instructions of academic and mystic A. E. Waite, and published by the Rider Company. “The Tarot de Marseille” being the most popular deck in Latin countries. There are two Arcana’s (decks) - Major and Minor: The Major Arcana (greater secrets), or trump cards, consists of 22 - 26 cards without suits: These cards are said to hold particular significance to the reader and can highlight urgent matters within the reading. The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Justice, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement, The World and The Fool. The Minor Arcana (lesser secrets) consists of 56 cards: Divided into four suits of 14 cards each; ten numbered cards and four court cards. The court cards are the King, Queen, Knight and Page/Jack, in each of the four tarot suits. The traditional Italian tarot suits are swords, batons/wands, coins and cups; in modern tarot decks, however, the batons suit is often called wands, rods or staves, while the coins suit is often called pentacles or disks. The names for the Minor Arcana suits are as follows: It should be noted that the energy of the card increases with the number of the card, by this I mean if a Querent is lacking in confidence and pulls a number 4 swords which is in the reverse position then pulls an 8 of the same suit still in the reverse then their situation is amplified by the 8. CUPS OR BOWLS This suit represents the emotional body of the human energy system. When working intuitively you can think of the cup as a vessel. If in the reverse position what is the Querent releasing or letting go? It may also be an indicator of empty feelings, no feeling or a lack of feelings. When the card is in the positive position they are full of life, joy, happiness etc. The Querent will be feeling emotionally strong and in control of their emotions at all times. This could also indicate an expansion of confidence and you move through the numbers from 1 – 10. WANDS, STAFFS OR STAVES This suit represents the spiritual and Mental body of the human energy system. When working with these cards in the reverse position what are they lacking in growth, they are spiritually stunted or lacking support spiritually. When in the positive position they are full of growth and energy, they are striving for the best wisdom and stability. They are usually in their full power as they have the wisdom or knowledge for success. COINS, DISKS, PENTACLES This suit represents the Mental body of the human energy system. When working with these cards in the reverse position they are lacking vision, have mental clutter or find that they are easily distracted by other people or influenced by other people. When in the positive position they are full of ideas, in a great creative space, planning phase or fruitful in business and success. SWORDS OR SPEARS This suit represents the Physical body on the human energy system. When working with these cards in the reverse position they are lacking physical energy, feel insecure, feel under par and can lack the physical strength to tackle daily issues. When they are in the positive position they are feeling physically strong, well within themselves, they can also feel ready to overcome any blocks or barriers that stand in their way. The Royal Cards in the Minor Arcana The royals represent coming into a level of power within that suit. Most decks have 3 royal cards but some do have 4 royal cards. When you apply the very simple definitions below to the suit of the card you can see the power of the Royal within each suit and the deeper meaning they can bring to the reading. The Knave or Knight – indicates young understanding of life skills, a need to use more caution. They are fearless in the positive position but can indicate a lack of courage in the reverse aspect. The Queen – indicates someone who has an understanding of their power, they are a diplomat and speak to avoid conflict. They use the softer aspects of their wisdom to gain what they want. The reverse shows someone who may have lost their way or given their power away The King – indicates someone in their full majesty, they are in control, have power and can make change happen. In the reverse position they are in crisis, they need to focus and see what action they need to take.
